A bleached elkhorn coral, ill but alive, sits amid other elkhorn coral off St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Bleaching from record hot water in the fall of 2005, followed by disease, killed ancient and delicate Caribbean coral.Governments are failing to stem a rapid decline threatening almost half the world's coral reef species, a third of amphibians and a quarter of mammals, a conservation watchdog warns.
